LaPorte Indiana is a small community of about 22,000 residents and is one of the two principal cities of the Michigan City and Laporte Indiana area. LaPorte has been rated as #2 of the best places to raise a family and LaPorte County. With excellent schools, low crime, diversity, affordable housing, and entertainment, LaPorte makes a wonderful place to call home.
Dating back to 1832, one of the first settlers in the area build a permanent cabin just north of what would become today's courthouse square. Over the next 50 years, the settlement had grown to the extent that LaPorte was now incorporated as a town. It was granted a city charter by the Indiana Gen. assembly and the first mayor was elected in 1852. Known for its numerous maple trees, LaPorte became known as the "Maple City" and it still has a historic downtown district, historical homes and buildings, and many structures were built out of red sandstone from Lake Superior shipped in via boat to Michigan City and then by rail to Laporte. The courthouse is considered to be one of LaPorte's Best known structures.
Residents with school-age children are assigned to the LaPorte community school Corporation serving over 6500 students. There are eight elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. LaPorte also has several private schools including St. John's Lutheran School, St. Joseph School, Renaissance Academy, Door Prairie Adventist Christian School, and La Lumiere School.
For being such a small town, LaPorte actually has quite a name for itself. The famous Advance Rumely tractor company was established in LaPorte and the town is been featured in movies including Prancer, A Piece of Eden, Treadmill, and Providence and was once the home to the world-famous Parsons Horological Institution. Harry Potter author JK Rowling has a Portkey or key to the city for LaPorte presented to tour by Emerson Spartz - (Portkey is a magical object and chanted instantly bring anyone touching it to a specific location but not to draw the attention of Muggles)
